Top Activities To Do In Whistler

Millions of people visit Whistler every year for its wide diversity of summer and winter activities. The world-renowned ski village sits at the foot of two gigantic mountains: Blackcomb Mountain and Whistler Mountain. Together, these 2 peaks make up the biggest winter sports area in North America!

Since co-hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Whistler resort’s popularity and fame around the world has skyrocketed. At WVH Management, we are proud to call Whistler our home with our lifelong love for Whistler. In this article, we’ve compiled some of the top outdoor activities to do in Whistler.

Bike or Ski at Whistler Mountain

Blackcomb Mountain and Whistler Mountain, the two enormous peaks that rise up above Whistler village, boasts some of the best skiing in North America. Whistler Blackcomb resort’s total combined skiable terrain is 3307 hectares with more than 200 ski runs! Because there is so much to see and do in Whistler, many visitors opt to spend a week or more at the resort when they visit.

Some hotels provide ski-in/ski-out access to the two mountains, and many restaurants and village dining options are within a convenient walking distance of the gondola base. For other options, heli-skiing and snowmobile trips are also very popular winter activities at the Whistler Blackcomb resort.

If you enjoy biking, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park should be at the very top of your bucket list. In the summertime, Whistler’s mountains are packed with mountain bikers and hikers. The world-renowned Whistler Mountain Bike Park has something for every level of rider. Whether you like cross country biking, recreational cycling, trail riding, expert level mountain biking, road cycling, or even electric biking, Whistler has everything you need for your dream trip.

The Peak 2 Peak Gondola

One of the most iconic things to do when you’re up in Whistler is to take a ride on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola.

In the winter season, you will see many snowboarders and skiers using the gondola to travel between runs on Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain. However, this gondola was not built just for skiers and snowboarders. Sightseers will get unparalleled views of the mountains as they ride through the sky.

The Peak 2 Peak Gondola is an amazing feat of engineering that connects Blackcomb Mountain to Whistler Mountain. This record-breaking gondola is the highest lift of its kind with an elevation of 436 m. What is even more amazing is that it covers a record-breaking distance of 4.4 km, but the ride itself takes only 11 minutes! On a sunny day, the view looks out to the mountains, dense forests and alpine lakes. In any season, the gondola provides an awe-inspiring view and locals consider it to be a part of the Whistler-Blackcomb sightseeing experience, along with guided walks and numerous photo opportunities.

Go Hiking

There is no shortage of hiking trails in British Columbia, and Whistler is no different. In the summertime, the snow melts away to reveal an immense outdoor playground for adventure seekers. Hikers will find that Whistler encompasses so much outdoor space that no matter which direction you take, you’ll quickly find yourself in the forest or by a lake.

Gondolas take hikers high above the treeline, where the trails offer a stunning view during wildflower season. The mountains also connect with Garibaldi Provincial Park, a park known for its clear waters, abundant wildlife and rich geological history.

Whether you are a beginner or expert hiker, you will be sure to find a trail that is right for your endurance level. Trails range from relaxing nature walks around Lost Lake to intense mountain climbs such as Panorama Ridge or Black Tusk. The reward of reaching the alpine viewpoint can be second to none, as this region has arguably some of the best scenery in Southwestern British Columbia.

Dog Sledding

Did you know that dog sledding originated more than 4000 years ago in Canada? Researchers have suggested that life in Northern Canada may not have been possible without this mode of transportation.

Dog sledding is a uniquely Canadian way to see the coniferous forests and mountain trails that surround Whistler. This family-filled adventure allows you to sit back in the sled and enjoy the thrilling ride, as an expert guide mushes your sled dog team. For adrenaline-seekers, you can also mush your own team for an added thrill.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a perfect family activity that is enjoyed by all ages and abilities. If you or someone you know is a fan of fishing, then make sure to book an unforgettable ice fishing adventure with Trout Country Fishing Guides!

The guided fishing trip includes transportation from your accommodating, fly fishing or spin fishing gear, fully guided fishing instruction, as well as special equipment such as waders, rods, reels, boots, flies, and lures.

Some of the types of fish you can catch include Rainbow Trout, Bull Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Pike minnows and Kokanee. While you fish, you can enjoy some of the most spectacular natural winter scenery.

It is highly recommended that you dress for below-zero temperatures and wear warm waterproof boots.

Soak in a Spa

After a full day of activities, the Scandinave Spa is the perfect place to unwind and indulge. This peaceful wellness retreat offers visitors the experience of a Scandinavian Spa in a relaxing setting. Enter the lodge, put on your swimsuit and robe, and then go outdoors into a sanctuary of silence. Experience the benefits of hydrotherapy by rotating through circuits of hot, cold, and relaxation.

With an admission price of $79, this famous spa is quite pricey but well worth the visit.

Sensuous massages (Swedish, deep tissue, duo, restorative, prenatal, RMT, etc.) are also performed in the lodge. While you do not need a reservation for the outdoor baths, we definitely advise it for the massages.

There’s a host of other spas and relaxation retreats throughout Whistler as well! A notable place if you are just looking for a quality massage is: Aviva Wellness Massage Spa.

As a world class four seasons mountain resort, Whistler attracts people from all walks of life. For the roughly three million tourists that travel to Whistler every year, there are an endless number of outdoor activity options for all seasons.
